Josephine Elizabeth Dunkin passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013 at Jefferson Place in Pella.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Ray in 2007; a son Gordon Brent in 1952; her parents Emanuel and Mathilda (Larson) Blomgren; brothers Wilmer, Robert, John, Melvin and Loren; and sister Mabel.
She is survived by her brother Joe of East Moline, ILL.; her sons Jim (Lana), and Mark, both of Bussey; her daughters Mary Edwards (John) of Pella, Jane (Doug) Phillips of Des Moines, and Gina Embray (Doug) of Van Horne. Jo has 13 grandchildren: Ryan Dunkin, Zack Dunkin (Brandy), Josh Edwards (Tristan), Holly Roby (Andy), Cody Pech, Michael Edwards, Derek Pech, Quintin Embray. Jolee Williams (Jared), Mikaela Dunkin, Ellie Embray, Mallory Pech and Andrew Pech. She also has six great--grandchildren: Brooke Dunkin, Cole Dunkin, Bailey Dunkin, Ainsley Dunkin, Jackson Edwards, and Jensen Roby.
Josephine was born Oct. 23, 1925 in the former mining community of Haydock, in Monroe Country. Growing up she lived in and around the communities of Buxton, Miami and Lovilia. Jo married Vincent Ray Dunkin on June 14, 1947 in Munterville. They made their home in Bussey for 56 years until health issues caused Ray to move to Long Term Care in Pella in 2003. Jo stayed in Bussey until 2004 when she moved to an apartment in Pella to be closer to Ray. In 2007 she moved to assisted living and in 2008 moved to Jefferson Place.
Jo spent her life as a caretaker. From her children and grandchildren, to her parents, in laws and siblings, she unselfishly spent hours takng care of others. Jo loved it when family came to visit and going out to eat with Ray. Jo enjoyed solving the daily crossword puzzle, watching the Cardinals, and golf on TV.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Albia and her faith in God was present until the very end.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 at 11 a.m., at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Nancy Reed officiating. Burial followed the luncheon in Greenlawn Cemetery in Bussey.
Visitation was also on Monday at the church from 10-11 a.m., Monday morning.
Memorials may be given to the family.
