Graduate of U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1834. Did service on the northern frontier in Georgia and in the Florida War. Resigned from Army May 31, 1836. Was planter and mayor of Quincy, Florida. Colonel, Florida Militia, 1845‑58. Member of the Board of Visitors to the U. S. Military Academy, 1849.

Served in Confederate Army as Lt. Colonel of 1st Florida Cavalry. He fought at Chickamauga among other battles, but was captured at Missionary Ridge and spent the remaining two years of the war as a prisoner of war.
