Mira was the daughter of Clarissa "Clara" Emory and her first husband David Jasper Barnes. David died on 12 Mar 1864 in Barton, VT. Clara married second, on 28 Aug 1866, Augustus Sanborn. Eventually, Mira assumed the surname Sanborn, as did her sister Dr. Kate Sanborn. Their youngest sister, Emma, was raised by her maternal grandparents, and always used the surname Barnes.
