Dr. William Lincoln Bates, proprietor of the Bates Sanitarium at Jamestown
and well known in Newport as well as in Jamestown, died Saturday evening, January 9th, at the Naval Hospital in Newport, after a brief illness. He had been in poor health for several months, suffering from a heart
affection. Dr. Bates had been a practicing physician, both in Providence
and Jamestown, maintaining for the past 40 years his sanitarium at Jamestown.
He was born January 1, 1855, in North Kingstown, son of Benjamin and Lucemia Howland CARR, his mother being a descendant of the Howland family of Rhode Island, noted Quaker stock. Upon the death of his mother he was adopted at the age of seven years, by relatives, John and Hannah Bates. Determined to pursue the profession of medicine, he studied at Brown University, at the University of Pennsylvania, at the Philadelphia Polyclinic, and the Philadelphia Electropathic Institute, graduating in December of 1891, and was in active and successful practice to the day of his death.
He was a member of the Rhode Island Historical society, The Providence
Franklin society, the Rhode Island Horticultural Society, and the Newport
and Jamestown historical societies. As a member of the Jamestown Board of Trade and as president of the Jamestown Historical Society for many years,he gave generously of his time and strength to these and all civic
interests. He was also a life member of the Society of Friends, and
numbered among his close friendships many of the leaders of this society.
