She was born Aaltje Bakker (= Baker) in August 1832 in the country village of Wehe-den Hoorn, located in the northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, daughter of Freerk Harms Bakker (36 years old, day-laborer) and Jantje Hendriks Voerman.

On September 24, 1861 Ellen Baker married in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana the three years younger Gerhard Aardappel (= Potato), born in October 1835 in also the northwestern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen.

They had the following children:
* Fred, born about 1864 in Indiana;
* John, December 1866, Lafayette, Indiana;
* Simon (Seymour), August 1869, Lafayette, Indiana;
* Jennie, July 1872, Lafayette, Indiana.

In August 1870 Aldge Ardapple (38 years old, born in Holland), her husband Gerh Ardapple (38, Holland, farmer), and their children Fred (6, Indiana), John (5, Indiana), and Simon (9 months, Indiana) were living on a rented farm in Lafayette, Fairfield Township, Tippecanoe County, located in the northwestern part of Indiana.

In 1910 Aleta Ardapple (75, Holland, immigrated in 1862, widow, mother 4 living children) was living in a rented house at 18 Avenue in Ward 3 of Fulton, Whiteside County, Illinois.

She died in 1913 at the age of about 80 years in Fulton, Whiteside County, Illinois.
