Hazel M. Bruntjen Fogler, 83, of Columbus, IN, formerly of Taylorville, died Monday, December 4, 2000, in Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center in Columbus.

She was born April 30, 1917, in Harvel, IL, the daughter of John G. and Mary E. (nee Potterf) Bruntjen. She married Robert Arden Fogler on February 23, 1946, at St. James Lutheran Church in Harvel. He died in 1962. They moved to Taylorville in 1949, where they owned and operated the Western Auto and Toyland stores. She taught in the Taylorville schools until her retirement in 1979. She founded the local chapter of AARP and served as president or vice-president for several years. She was a member of the BPW, AAUW and Peter Meyer Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class.

Surviving are her two sons: Robert A. Fogler of Taylorville and Richard S. (wife Mary) Fogler of Columbus, IN; daughter, Jeanne M. (husband Jeff) Meek of Bolingbrook; 12 grandchildren: Tammy (husband Tyler) Kraemer of Colorado Springs, CO, Robbie Fogler of Normal, Dennis Alexander of Hinsdale, Ryan Alexander of Bloomington, Jeff Meek of Lake Forest, CA, Jennifer Meek of Bolingbrook, and Richard Jr., Nicholas, Leonie, Carol, Robert and Rebecca Fogler, all of Columbus; sister, Margaret (husband Wayne) Bates of Raymond; and son-in-law, Dennis Alexander of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Barbara A. Alexander; two brothers, John H. and Melvin Bruntjen; and sister, Esther Crawford.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, December 9, 2000, in the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Phillip Icenogle officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, December 8, at Shafer Funeral Home.
