"A consummate gentleman and true cowboy, Max Horne lived his life surrounded by the people he loved, working with animals he loved, on the land he loved – land that was purchased by his great grandfather, Anderson Petty, in 1879.

"A fiercely independent man with a well-known stubborn streak, he combined the things he loved with hard work and was known across the state and beyond for shoeing horses for nearly 60 years; carrying the mail on the Glen Cove Route for 55 years; roping steers into his eighties, competing in and often winning the "old timer's" team roping events; and loving Christmas, carrying on his father's tradition of playing Santa.

"He also farmed and raised livestock, managing his last big herd well into his eighties. In his youth, he rode stock trains to Kansas City, worked cattle on his uncle's ranch, and married the "beautiful blonde" Billie Ruth Brewer, daughter of the late Alvie Curtis Brewer and Jessie Lee Johnson Brewer.

"The 2000 Coleman County Rural Citizen of the Year, Horne was actively involved in many civic activities. He was elected as a Coleman County Commissioner four times, from 1975 – 1995, and while in office was appointed to serve on the Grant Review Board for West Central Texas Councils of Governments by former Governor Ann Richards. He also served on the Tax Appraisal District Board. Locally, he served on the board of directors for the Coleman Senior Citizen Center and was active in its remodeling. He served as president of the Breeder Feeder Association, president of the Coleman County Livestock Show and senior president of the Coleman Junior Rodeo Association. In 1958, he received the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree from the Coleman FFA Chapter in recognition of outstanding service to vocational agriculture and to the Future Farmers of America. He was a member of the Original Team Roping Association and a member of the Professional Cowboy Rodeo Association for more than 60 years.

"Born in Tuscola, Texas on February 20, 1925 to the late Simon Petty Horne and Lucille Pauley Horne, who had moved to Tuscola from Coleman for business opportunity, he lived all but the first three years of his life in Coleman County.

"Horne, 88 of Coleman, died November 10, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Billie and three children: Mitzi Horne (John) Summers of Paige, Texas; Simon Kit (Mindy) Horne of Tuscola, Texas; and William Scott Horne of South Orange, New Jersey. He also leaves four grandchildren: Chad (Amanda) Summers of Austin; Jenny Summers (Landry) Tucker of Paige, Texas; Adam Horne and Tova Horne of Tuscola; great granddaughter Camryn Tucker; five nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Bobbie Horne McMinn.

"A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Coleman at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 12. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Coleman, Holiday Hill Nursing Center or West Texas Rehabilitation Center Hospice of the Big Country.

"Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman."
