KERRVILLE - Ruth Bales Brackeen, 101, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010, in Kerrville, Texas.
Born Sept. 7, 1908, in Hermleigh, Texas, to George L. and Sarah McGraw Cole, Ruth was the youngest of 13 children, all now deceased.
Ruth was raised in Oklahoma and attended two years of college. After marriage, and during the Great Depression, she worked as an alterations manager at a Fur Shop. After moving to California, she worked as a cashier at the famous Pinkerton Detective Agency before becoming a successful Realtor in 1959.
Ruth also was very involved with Pepperdine University, serving in many roles with the Associated Women for Pepperdine, Center for Women's Studies and other development committees.
After moving to Kerrville in 1981, Ruth began volunteering at Kerrville State Hospital in 1984. Before a stroke caused her to slow down in 2006, she had clocked more than 10,000 volunteer hours of service. She taught many sewing, quilting and baking classes and was famous for her peach cobbler, which was served every year at the fundraising gala.
Ruth also was preceded in death by former husband, Ralph Bales; son, Perry Don McBroom; and two granddaughters.
Ruth is survived by her daughter, Monna Verne Kornman and husband, Dick; daughter-in-law, Jackie McBroom; son, Jerry McBroom and wife, Lavonne; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel. Services will be Saturday, April 24, at 10 a.m. at Kerrville Church of Christ, 1900 Loop 534, with Dr. Greg Cummings officiating. There will be a private family burial at Garden of Memories later.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
