Joseph Lewis McGimsey came to Burke county from Virginia and at first taught school. He later bought farmland along the Linville River. He first married Allie Moore Wakefield, widow of Alexander Wakefield. His second marriage was to Elizabeth Alexander.
Joseph and Allie had two sons, Joseph Alphonso McGimsey and Alpheus McGimsey, and three daughters. Joseph and Elizabeth had two daughters.
When Lake James was built in the early part of the 20th century, the McGimsey burial ground was perilously close to the water, so the graves were moved to Linville Methodist Church. Joseph's tombstone is no longer legible, but he is believed to be buried near Alley McGimsey.
