Sycamore True Republican

July 30, 1870

A sad and fatal occurence took place in the town of Hampshire, Kane Co., IL., on the 13th last.
As Mr. Charles DeWolf, one of our oldest and most esteemed citizens, was in the act of detaching his horse
from a rake he had been using, a honey bee from a stand near by, stung the horse about the head, causing him to fly back, by which movement upset the hive, and the whole swarm of bees, enraged at being thus disturbed, flew at Mr. DeWolf, lighting upon his head, in hs eyes, mouth, neck, and ears, stinging him so dreadfully that in less than four hours he became unconscious.
His daughter, Mrs. John Allen, and a neighbor hearing his cries for help as the bees came upon him, ran to his assistance, and succeeded in beating them off, and getting the old gentleman away, but not in time to save his life. He remained in an unconscious state until the morning of the 5th when he breathed his last, being in his 77th year.

Charles is the son of Edward DeWolf and Sarah Colson Bill
