Barbara T. Doan died peacefully August 13, 2013, at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines, IA, following a lengthy illness.
Barbara was born on February 23, 1935 in Davenport, IA to Dr. James W. and Eloise C. Thayer. She graduated from the Villa de Chantal in Rock Island, IL, in 1953, the University of Iowa in 1957 with a BA degree with a major in elementary education and did post-graduate work at Drake University.
She was united in marriage with D T Doan on August 17, 1957 in Davenport, IA, and, after teaching in elementary schools in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, IA, was a homemaker after moving to Des Moines, IA in 1960. Barbara and D T traveled extensively throughout the world for many years until her failing health made travel difficult.
Barbara was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 55 years, D T, and by their children: Kathleen (James) Best of Clive, IA, and Michael (Marianne) Doan of Wilmette, IL, and their grandchildren: Sarah and Greg Best and Katie, Robbie and James Doan. She was preceded in death by her parents and only sibling, James W. Thayer, Jr.
Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines, IA. Private funeral services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines, IA on Friday, August 16, 2013.
