In 1900 he, his parents, his two brothers, and his paternal grandfather lived in a place they were renting in Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County, PA. His father worked as a coal miner.

In 1910 he lived with his brother Herman, his wife, and their daughter in a place they were renting at 1088 1/2 South Main Street in Akron, OH. His brother worked as a laborer making table oil cloth, and he as a laborer in a sand quarry.

In 1930 he and his wife and their seven children lived in a house they owned in Cornplanter Township, Venango County, PA. Their home was valued at $2400, and they did not have a radio. He worked as a laborer at an oil refinery.

In 1940 he and Twila and their nine children lived in a house they were renting for $18 a month at 508 Plummer Street in Oil City, PA. He worked as a laborer for an oil company, with an income in 1939 of $1222 for 52 weeks of work, and Geraldine as a housekeeper in a private home, with an income in 1939 of $260 for 52 weeks of work.
