Patriarch of the Whitmer family, among the earliest members of the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Five sons and two sons-in-law witnessed the golden plates, the source of the Book of Mormon. At the request of his son David he invited Joseph and Emma Smith and Oliver Cowdery to stay at the family farm in Fayette, New York where the translation of the Book of Mormon was completed in 1829. Joseph Smith convened the meeting to organize the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Peter’s home on April 6, 1830; he was baptized a week later. The entire family moved to Ohio in 1831 and to Missouri the following year. In 1838, he left the church when two of his sons were excommunicated. He settled in Ray County for his remaining years.
