Dorothy was born to Irvin C. and Emma V. (Cummings) Almony on March 12, 1924, in White Hall, Md. She was preceded to the next life by her husband, Alvin 'Joe' in August of 2001.
She was one of 13 children and is survived by one brother, Horace Almony of the Glen Rock area, and two sisters, M. Pearl Shaffer near Lineboro, Md., and Mable Bankert near Shrewsbury. Dorothy leaves behind four children, JoAnn Whetzel of York and three sons, Ray, Robert (Bob), and Alvin (AJ), Jr., all from the Red Lion area. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Dorothy was a caring, compassionate and courteous mother, grandmother, and friend to all.
She helped take care of the elderly in her teen years, worked at the former New Freedom Canning Factory, and for Black & Decker. After WWII she married Joe. They settled in Shrewsbury where she became a meticulous homemaker and loving mother of her four children. She served in the nursery at St Paul's U.C.C. in Shrewsbury and helped many years with the Shrewsbury Carnival and Fire Company suppers.
She and Joe lived in Shrewsbury nearly 50 of their 54 married years. Her smile was contagious and beautiful. She was always grateful for visitors and would part with "God Bless You!" Her feelings toward people could be summed up by this quote: "treating everyone she met like family, and burying needless criticism of others so deep beneath the soil of everyday living that only kindness saw the light." Throughout her life she enjoyed nearly weekly family gatherings at her parents' home and then at her sisters and brothers. They were a family that was loving, supportive and always there for each other.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dorothy's name may be made to Bentley Springs United Methodist Church, 419 Bentley Road, Parkton, MD 21120. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary of New Freedom is assisting the family with arrangements.
