The son of Ebenezer & Margaret (Morrison) Shields and stepson of Rachel (Robison) Shields, he married Eve Ann Benchoff May 29, 1849, in Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Elmira L (b. 05/??/50), David Banner (b. 06/21/52), Lewis A. (b. @1855), John Sanford (b. 08/28/56), Margaret A. (b. 01/08/60 - married Charles Washington Pugh), Ellen (b. @1861), Ulysses S. Grant (b. @1864), and William Stanton (b. 01/24/67). In 1850, he was living in Frederick County, Maryland, and in 1860 was a millwright living with his family in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 6' 0" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, August 21, 1862, as a private with Co. H, 6th Maryland Infantry, and promoted to corporal January 15, 1863. On July 7, 1863, he is listed as absent without leave from camp near Frederick, Maryland, an escapade that cost him $10.00 and, it appears, another $15.00 on top of that. He is listed as AWOL to date September 23, 1863, with a $10.00 reward on his head but was arrested that same day in Baltimore. Back to duty, he was “shot by a sharpshooter near Spotsylvania Va. May 9, 1864,” and admitted to Harewood U.S. Hospital in Washington DC where surgeons amputated his left arm near the shoulder. He deserted from the hospital to date November 30, 1864, and charged $4.84 for transportation back to the hospital where he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate February 3, 1865.

By 1870, he a surveyor and again living in Frederick County, Maryland.
