On May 6, 1870 Thomas and Katherine Kearns, started for Kansas in a covered wagon where they arrived in early June. Thomas homesteaded a quarter section of land in Lincoln township, Washington County, Kansas where the following births occurred: Fred, Arthur Harmon, Wesley Eugene and twins Clarence and Katie Mae. The twins died in infancy. Ten years after the death of Katherine, Thomas sold the property and went to Oklahoma territory making his home with his sons until his death at the home of Wesley Eugene Kearns at the Caney River Ford near Vera, Oklahoma.
Other children born to Thomas and Katherine were, William Eugene, Frank, Allen, Sherman, John Harvey and Charles Francis Kearns.
