HIRAM J. EATON PIONEER,
DIES IN MINNESOTA
The body of Hiram J. Eaton , a pioneer resident of Alpena who died Tuesday, July 21 at Virginia City Minnesota is expected to arrive here Thursday evening. No particulars concerning his death are available but it is presumed to be due to infirmities of age since Mr. Eaton was about 90 years of age.
Mr. Eaton was born near Rochester New York where he spent his early boyhood. In 1861 he enlisted for service as a soldier in the Civil War with Company D, second Wisconsin Infantry and remained in service until June, 1863. In 1863 Mr. Eaton first came to Alpena making his home here for many years. In 1864 and 1865 Mr. Eaton cut the road that is now known as Washington avenue, and the following summer corduroyed it. Mr. Eaton was engaged in lumbering for 11 years here.
In 1874 Mr. Eaton built a shop on Chisholm street and engaged in the manufacturing of wagons and carriages and old blacksmithing as well. Soon after he took Mr. McTavish into partnership with him but this was dissolved in 1875 carrying on the business alone.
Mr. Eaton was prominent in civic affairs of Alpena and for two years was sheriff of Alpena county and deputy sheriff for 4 years. He was also superintendent of the Poor Board at one time.
