He was born in Marcus Hook to the Late Elwood and Emily Hays.
He was a graduate of Eddystone High School. Richard worked at Sun Oil as a rigger for many years until his retirement. He was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he served as an instructor.
He enjoyed boating, deep sea fishing and working on tug boats as part of the family business. He also loved spending time with his three dogs, Troy, Grim and Rage.
He was predeceased by his wife, Laura E. Hays, who died in 2012.
Survivors: His children, Robin L. Hays, Terry A. Hays-Sapp, Richard M. Hays and Corie S. Hays; grandchildren, Timmy, Colin and Hailey; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Harry Hays.
Graveside Service: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood.
