Herschel, was the son of Herschel P. Helm and Adder N. Helm, and the dear brother of Donald L. Helm all of Coffeeville MS. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 15 1965 and was on extended active duty serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On September 15 at 0730 hours Company D was Heli-lifted to the vicinity of Tan Lich in the Gio Linh District of Quang Tri Province just south of the DMZ and began participating on Operation PRAIRIE. Several days into the operation, the BLT 1/26 (Battalion Landing Team) was placed under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 4th Marines, and the 3d Division. At approximately 0945 hours September 18, north of Gia Binh, the lead platoon of Company D was hit from three sides by enemy automatic weapons fire which resulted in PFC Helm being killed and another Marine being wounded.
