David Lewis was born in Hanover County, Virginia. He moved to Albemarle County about 1750. He married Rebecca Stovall and had a daughter, Mildred. After the death of Rebecca, he moved to Rutherford County, North Carolina. He moved again to the Waxhaw settlement in South Carolina, where he married his second wife, Elizabeth Lockhart. A few years after marrying Elizabeth they moved to Spartanburg District, South Carolina. David and Elizabeth had 11 children together.
