Obituary: Veteran City Fireman Dies
Capt. Charles H. Jones, 63, vet-
eran member of the Charleston
fire department, died today at
8:05 a.m. in the Camden-Clark
Memorial hospital in Parkersburg.

examination. He had suffered a
heart condition for some time.
A platoon commander,Captain
Jones was one of two department
officers second in command to
Chief O. E. Boggess.
He first joined the department
in 1921, left for a time in 1922
and returned on the substitute list
n 1923. He became a permanent
department member on June 29,
1925. His promotion to captain was
on June 27, 1939.
Capt. Jones for many years was
a pumper company driver. It was
his boast that he knew the loca-
tion of every street and avenue
in Charleston,
A native of Cicerone, Roane
county. Capt. Jones was born
there on Aug. 19, 1890. Before be-
coming a fireman he worked in
the oil fields and served in the
armed forces in World War 1.
He was a member of the Meth-
odist church and the Masonic
lodge.
In addition to his duties as a
fireman, Capt. Jones and his
wife, Verta, who survives operated
a restaurant at 831 Pennsyl-
vania Ave. They also resided at
that address.
Other survivors are a daughter,
Mrs. Ralph Cowgill of Charleston;
two brothers, George of Parkersburg,
Clarence of Gandyville. and two
grandchildren.
The body is being returned from
the Vaughan Funeral Home in
Parkersburg to the Barlow-Bonsall
Funeral Home here.
