Eli Stanford was born in Bulloch County, September 22, 1827, a son of David Stanford. He was brought in his infancy by his parents to Lowndes County when they moved there. In the latter 1840's the family moved from Lowndes over into the adjoining county of Ware, but in the creation of Clinch County out of the two counties in 1850 they were cut into the new county. Eli Stanfordin 1849 married Mary Taylor, a daughter of William Taylor; she at the time was living with her brother, John (or John E.) Taylor in Ware now Clinch County. The 1850 census shows that they had married during the year ending June 30, 1850, and had no children.
Their children were:
1. Georgia Ann b. 1850, m. Joseph S. Hurst, Sept. 22, 1872
2. Elijah b. 1851, m. Dory Ann Hurst, April 1, 1872
3. Martha Elizabeth b. 1853, m. Emanuel Boatright
4. Mary Adeline b. 1854, m. Macon R. Hurst, January 2, 1872
5. Sarah Ann b. 1857, m. Dixon Bennett (son of Felix), Dec. 29, 1889
6. Reubin b. 1858, died in boyhood
7. David b. 1862, died in boyhood
8. Emma B. b. 1864, m. Micajah Padgett

Eli Stanford lived on a farm belonging to his father, for several years after marriage, but later aquired his own lands on Suwanncccchee Creek in Clinch County. He lived there until about 1867 when he sold out and moved to Suwannee County, Fla., where he settled about 14 miles south of Live Oak.He died in Live Oak Nov. 9, 1903, and was buried at Friendship Church. His wife died in 1900. He was buried by her.
