Daughter of two Oregon Pioneer families, Mary was the sister-in-law of California Associate Supreme Court Justice Henry Alexander Melvin. After the death of her father S. Bradford Morse in 1900, Mary and mother Frances Morse moved to Oakland to be near sisters, Sarah Louise Morse Melvin and Ruth Morse John.

Mary's birth date is something of a conundrum. While California Death Index states she was born "November 4, 1868," the 1900 census states "October 1868." We don't know if whoever answered the door for the census taker in 1900, or the person who filled out the form for the CDI was correct. I'm choosing the 1900 door-answerer.
