Margaret was born at home in Gonzales, Texas to William Alvin and Marie Baker on December 14, 1927.
The family lived in several towns nearby due to her father working as a barber. They moved to Galveston, TX during her early childhood years. She went to high school at Ball High and graduated in 1945. Her college years were divided between Southwestern Junior College in Keene, TX and Southern Missionary College in Collegedale, TN. where she graduated with an associate degree in Secretarial Science in 1949. She worked as a secretary for American National Insurance in Galveston, TX and Oklahoma Conference Office in Oklahoma City, OK. While living and working in Oklahoma City, she met Adam Kerbs at local youth meetings.
They married on Oct. 26, 1952 and moved into the old farm house in Shattuck, OK on the Kerbs family farm. The focus of her time moved to their three children. Richard, Cyndthia, and Johnnie. She took up the responsibility of being a supportive farmers wife particularly during wheat harvest time when the wives took at least 2 meals a day to the workers in the field. In the summer of 1969 the family made a decision to move to Keene, TX so that the three children could continue their Christian education while living at home. She was always very active in the home and school fund raisers both in Shattuck and Keene. She also worked from home typing for a court reporter for many years until she had eye surgery and could no longer continue.
Margaret had a love for home making. She excelled at cooking and sewing. The caféteria supervisor from the College upon tasting some of her recipes made part of the regular menus. Whoever ate at her table can testify to her wonderful cooking ability. Seasoning and creativity with recipes were a special talent. Every year she spent many hours canning and freezing all kinds of fruits and vegetables. She made hundreds of loaves of homemade whole wheat bread from flour ground from the wheat grown on the farm.
Sewing was both a hobby and necessity. She sewed all of her clothes and her daughters clothes and later some outfits for her grandchildren. She was very creative with the ability to sew one of a kind garments that she had sketched. She enjoyed crocheting and other types of needle work.
In early childhood she showed a love for music that she developed for her own interest by playing the piano and singing as a pass time. She wanted to pass along her love for music to her children so she taught all three beginning piano lessons.
Traveling was especially enjoyable to Margaret. She was very fond of revisiting her home town of Galveston,TX. On these trips she loved stopping at antique stories and enjoyed visiting relatives along the way.
Margaret was very active in her church using both her secretarial skills and her musical talent. She faithfully studied her lessons and attended weekly services enjoying Christian fellowship.
Margaret Kerbs is survived by her husband, Adam; her children Richard and his wife Dawn, Cynthia, Johnnie and his wife Genni. There are five grandchildren: Shawn Jenkins and his wife Chloe, Jason Kerbs, Whitney Proctor and her husband Ausstin, Brittney Kerbs, and Shelby Kerbs. There are two great grand daughters, Blaire Jenkins and London Kerbs. She is also survived by her brother W.A. Baker and his wife Yvonne and her sister Carolyn Jensen and her husband Ron.
