Born Donald Edmund Campbell to Patrick Campbell and Frances (MacDonald) Campbell. His brother, Stanley Campbell, also became a Passionist (Fr. Walter Campbell) and died in 1920.

He professed his vows on September 6, 1908. Studied at the new monastery of St. Gabriel's, Brighton, Massachusetts, and then at St. Michael's, West Hoboken, New Jersey. He was ordained on May 26, 1915 by Bishop John J. O'Connor of Newark, New Jersey.

He arrived in China in August, 1923 and died of heart failure at the Immaculate Conception Rectory in Hankow.
