Riley was the oldest of fifteen children of James and Susanna (Suzan) Ellison. Riley joined the US Army when he was 33 years old. He was a private in Company A – 5’th Regiment of the California Infantry. He served under the command of Captain Edwin B. Friends during the “Civil War”, in California, New Mexico, and the Arizona Territory. Riley was discharged after three years of service at LaMissilla, New Mexico, on Nov. 30, 1864. Riley was 5ft 4 ¾, with light complexion and dark hair and gray eyes. They said Riley wore a beard to cover the scars on his face, which he suffered while he served in the Army in Arizona Territory from fighting Indians. He rode in the great, “Oklahoma Land Run”, of 1889 and settled a homestead of 160 acres north of Guthrie, Oklahoma in Lawrie Township.
