Eldest son of Perry and Elizabeth Patterson Baldwin.

Perry was the son of Isaac and Mary Baldwin in Monroe County, Ohio. Perry later remarried to widow Lydia Hendricks Selman, mother of this Thomas's wife, Mary Ann "Annie." (The reference on this Thomas' death record to his wife as a Patterson is confused about family relations but right on first name and that the surname still figures into the family.) After Perry died sometime in the early 1870s, Lydia remarried a third time and is buried as Lydia Pastors in Jefferson County, Ohio.

Thomas' mother Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Jennings Patterson, who moved to Monroe County, Ohio, from the Uniontown PA/Blacksville WV area. Widowed Sarah remarried there to Dr. John Brookover, lived for their married life in Monroe County, Ohio, but then died in adjacent Washington County, where her son and two of her daughters lived. The daughters were Elizabeth Patterson Baldwin and her sister Hellen Marr Patterson Paynter. Thomas moved from Monroe County, Ohio, to Washington County, Ohio, to adjacent Wood County WV and then to Alton KS. His mother, Elizabeth Baldwin, died before her mother, Sarah Jennings Patterson Brookover. After Elizabeth and her mother died in Washington County, Ohio, Hellen and her family moved from there to Alton KS, too, and lived with Thomas's family while the Paynter's sod home was being made. The Paynters are buried in Kansas.

But Thomas left Kansas for Idaho after his wife and child or two died at Alton.

Their surviving children, according to the 1885 state census were Theodore, Stephen, Albert (buried in this cemetery, also), Orah, Eliza, Ruth and Arvile.

Burials in Kansas, besides his wife, were "Little Joe" and an "I.R."
