He was a scientific instrument maker who assembled telescopes. Married to Mary Newman Brightly until her death.

At the age of 63 on 27 Nov 1880 he married Maria Woodside Farley, daughter of a Philadelphia physician, and the couple raised three boys, Horace, Clarence, and William.
