Ruth A. Leonard, 92, a resident of Bettendorf, died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Manor Care Utica Ridge, Davenport. Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Ruth will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park with military honors. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Ruth Alice McEachern was born on April 14, 1921 in Salem, Massachusetts, a daughter of John R. and Ruth Alice (Hobbs) McEachern. She graduated from Boston University. After graduation she taught high school for a few years then enlisted with the Women's Air Corp (WAC) during World War II where her duties included marketing/publicity and making sure the officers received all the appropriate training.
While in the service, she met her future husband of almost 68 years, Eber Jack "Len" Leonard. They were united in marriage on July 22, 1945 at Immaculate Conception in Salem, MA. He preceded her in death on February 24, 2013.
Ruth taught at Lourdes Catholic School for 10 years where she taught Language Arts, German, and French. A member of Lourdes Catholic Church since 1951, she helped organize the church library.
Ruth was very giving of her time and talents. She was very active in a group that did taxes for the elderly and less fortunate; at one point leading with the organization, recruitment, and supervision of the group. In her free time she was an avid reader, sometimes reading three books at a time. She also enjoyed crosswords, brain teasers, playing bridge, and daily exercise. Ruth loved her dogs, having at least one most of her life, and she was passionate about politics.
Memorials may be made to Scott County Humane Society.
Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Marilee Leonard, Bettendorf; 3 grandchildren, Jeff (Sarah) Leonard, Kris (Larry) Ratigan, all of Davenport, and Jim (Jackie) Leonard of Bettendorf; 6 great-grandchildren, Madeline, Claire, Nicholas, Jordan, Matthew, and Hope; a sister- in law, Helen McEachern, Beverly, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Margaret Leonard and two brothers, Phillip and Robert. May they rest in peace.
