Helen Austin McAllister, 96, formerly of Bridgeton passed away peacefully on May 3, 2016 in Rockingham, NC.
Born in Greenwich, she was the daughter of the late Martha (nee Cook) and Raymond Austin.
She is survived by three children, Charleen Cook-Gershon (Howard) of Santa Fe, NM, Marsha Wilson (Herbert) of Rockingham, NC and Robert McAllister of Greenwich, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Charles Wible McAllister in 1954, a sister Marie Ferguson and brothers Henry and Frank Austin. Also preceding her in death was her longtime companion, Joseph Kumiski, who died in 2011.
Helen graduated from Bridgeton High School in the class of 1936. She was a bookkeeper and cashier at the JC Penney store in Bridgeton, worked in the voter registration office at the Cumberland County Court House and served as Clerk to the Jury Commission at the Court House for 27 years. She was an active volunteer in politics and past president of Bridgeton Women’s Republican Club.
In addition, she and her companion volunteered for Cumberland County RSVP and delivered “Meals on Wheels” until late in life. She was a member of the Greenwich Baptist Church and Temple Baptist Church in Rockingham, NC. Mrs. McAllister had also been a member of the Shiloh Senior Citizens.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at the Greenwich Baptist Church, 928 Ye Grate St. in Greenwich on Tuesday afternoon May 10th at 1 o’clock where friends will be received from 12 Noon until 1.
The interment will follow the service and take place at the Greenwich Presbyterian Cemetery in Greenwich.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home of Bridgeton.
