Lt Commander Coil was part of a team that had been sent to England for tests of a new British airship, the ZR2. During air tests over the English town of Hull ZR2 exploded and crashed. 16 of the 17 member American team and 28 of the 32 British crew were killed. In accordance with Coil's wishes, he was buried at sea on September 20, 1921, from the deck of the USS Breck (DD283).
