DR. CIRO O. SCOTTI, M.D., 84, of Hope Street, a physician with offices in West Warwick from 1939 until his retirement in 1986, died yesterday at home. He was the husband of Rita Ward (Dwyer) Scotti.
Born in Barano d'Ischia, Italy, a son of the late Dr. Luigi Scoti, and Lady Michelina (Iacono) Scotti, he lived in Providence for 50 years.
Dr. Scotti was educated by the Salesian Fathers and the Benedictine monks at Monte Cassino in Italy. He was graduated with high honors from the University of Rome Medical School. In Rhode Island, he was on the surgical staff of St. Joseph and Kent County Memorial Hospitals. He was a fellow of the International College of Surgeons, and an associate of the New England Urological Society. He was a member of the American Medical Association, and the Rhode Island and Kent County Medical Societies.
He was a knight commander of the Order of St. Gregory, and served as a Palatine Guard during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX. The Capuchin Order of St. Francis granted him its highest award. He was the only American member of FUCI (Federazione Universitaria Cattolica Italiana). For his work in flood relief, he was honored by the City of Florence in 1966.
Dr. Scotti was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, and served as a Eucharistic minister at Miriam Hospital.
Besides his wife he leaves five sons, Nino D., Francesco M., Peter M., and Joseph M. Scotti, all of Providence, and Ciro M. Scotti of New York; six daughters, Maria S. Chapin, Rita A. and Elena M. Scotti, and Alice M. Mandel, all of New York, Paula S. Shevlin of Bronxville, N.Y., and Barbara M. Riehle of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Caterina DiMeglio of Rome; a brother, Salvatore Scotti of Cranston, and 15 grandchildren. He was a nephew of the late Archbishop Giovanni Scotti and Msgr. Ciro Scotti in Rome, and a cousin of the late Msgr. Giuseppi DiMeglio, a canon of St. Peter's in Rome.
