Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Gertie Swain Phillips.Gertrude “Gertie” Margaret Phillips age 98 years, 2 months, and 16 days, passed away January 27, 2016 at Williamsburg Health and Rehabilitation Center in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Gertie lived a long and fruitful life. She was a great support to her family and friends and was always there to provide any help or care to others because of her loving and generous spirit.

Gertie was born on November 11, 1917, to Joe Francis and Dora Lee (Roberts) Coffey in Whitley City. She would marry Elmer Swain in 1934. They made their home in an old white farmhouse atop a hill in Smithtown which saw the couple bring 4 children into this world: Carol Bowman (Hollen), Betty Jo Ball (Don L), Harold Swain (Jeannette), and Joe Darrell Swain. The children of Gertie and Elmer would go on to produce 13 grandchild, 31 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren; all in Gertie's lifetime.

After Elmer’s death in 1954, she worked hard to provide for her family and worked many jobs to make a good life for them; including running a laundry/ironing home business, managing Sinclair Station on Main Street, a clerk at Conatser’s Store also on Main Street, and of course her small farm. She learned early that hard work was a way of life; something she instilled in many people. At only 8 years old she started measuring logs for board feet for Captain John Geary with her dad, Joe. And we all known her infamous garden fed thousands of friends and family over many decades and it was a great pride of hers. She worked her field many, many years, and broke many beans on the front porch of that old farmhouse or sitting on the bank watching the cars go by with her grandkids just to feed those she loved. Aside from gardening, Gertie loved to quilt. She and her second husband, Herman, would watch wrestling while she quilted. Her quilts have covered and warmed many generations of family and are prized possession of those lucky enough to have them.

In her lifetime she saw many wars, 17 presidents, and many trials and tribulations; but she also saw much love and admirations from all those around her. She was a one-of-a-kind woman that will never be forgotten by those who were blessed to know and love her during her nearly century long life. She will live on in every single life that she touched and through the lessons she taught. She will be here for countless generations to come.

Gertie was a member of Whitley City First Baptist Church and because of her Christian faith was greeted at the gates by her parents, Joe and Dora; her husbands, Elmer Swain and Herman Phillips; brothers Claude, Clarence, and Thirstle Coffey; sisters, Gladys Anderson, Maudie Ball, and Elsie Whitehead; her son Joe Darrel, grandsons Grant Hughes, Jerry Hughes, and Joe Darrell Swain II; a great-granddaughter Aimee Chitwood; her great-great grandchildren Grant Torkelson and Ashlee Coverstone.
