Dr. John R. Calder, a dentist from Richland Hills who spent his retirement at his home on the Brazos River in Millsap and later at his farm in Hugo, Oklahoma, died peacefully at the home of his son, Kent Calder, in Denton on Tuesday, October 22. Born in Hugo on August 25, 1923, he grew up in the Texas Panhandle and graduated from Phillips High School in 1940, where he played football for the Phillips Blackhawks. He served as a cadet in the Army Air Corps and enjoyed the time he spent stationed at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He later went to Texas Christian University, graduated from the University of Texas School of Dentistry, and moved to Fort Worth in 1952.
He married Frances Irene Mitchell May 4, 1946, and they had four children: Carlye, Kent, Danny, and Jayme, all of whom graduated from Richland High School. Dr. Calder was active in the civic life of Richland Hills as a member of Richland Hills Christian Church and the Lions Club. He also served as president of the Texas Dental Society.
He was a loving father to his children and a good friend to all who knew him. In later years he enjoyed working on his homes in Millsap and Hugo with his longtime companion Evelyn Musgrave and never tired of building, tinkering, and improving his environment. He was a sportsman who loved to fish, play tennis, and do anything that involved throwing or hitting a ball, especially ping pong. He was well known for always leaving things better than he found them, and that is how he left this world.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Mitch, James, and Everett, his sister Imogene, and by his grandson Robert Todd Arnold. He is survived by his brother David Calder and wife Marilyn of Oregon, daughter Carlye Lynn Arnold and husband Jerry, son Kent Calder and wife Tara Carlisle, son Danny Calder and wife Pam, and daughter Jayme McDaniel and husband Rex. His grandchildren are Dace Arnold, Tara Hansen, Josh Calder, Clay Calder, Brett McDaniel, Trevor McDaniel, Lainey Calder, and Luke Calder. Great grandchildren are Devyn Arnold and Lauren and Riley Hansen.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Texas State Historical Association.
