Age 79, son of the late Orianna Bondurant Harris and Sydney W. Harris, Sr.

Born in Lynchburg, Va., he attended school there and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1942. During WWII, he served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, stationed in Guam, and earning the Victory WWII, America Area, and Asiatic-Pacific Area medals. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Howard University in Washington, DC, in 1949, and a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Immediately after graduating from Howard University, he was selected as one of the first African-American engineers ever to be hired by General Electric Co. He earned many commendations and awards. He retired from General Electric in 1993, and worked as an EMI Consultant from 1994 to 1997, before retiring permanently. He was active in civic affairs. He was an enthusiastic train buff who enjoyed both watching and riding trains. He was an avid skier and devoted Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.

Mr. Harris was pre-deceased by his wife of nearly 45 years, Eileen Cerami Harris, who died in 2002; his son, Michael Peter Harris, who died in 1996; and a brother, Attorney Robert A. Harris, who died in 1980.

He is survived by his brothers, Dr. David L. Harris, Lynchburg, Va., and Dr. Vascar G. Harris, Tuskegee, Ala.; his children, Sydney W. Harris, III (wife Susan), Epping, N.H., Richard A. Harris, Sr. (wife Mariann), Saugus, Mass., Karen E. Fox (husband Chris), Livonia, Mich., Nancy E. Harris, with whom he made his home in Pittsfield, MA and six grandchildren.
