Sergeant Howard was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy on Hill 1051, South Korea on May 18, 1951. He died during a march to a temporary POW camp from malnutrition on July 31, 1951. His remains were not recovered.
