Bascom was the youngest son of LeRoy and Elizabeth (Frey) Covington, growing up as part of a large family in Robertson County, middle Tennessee, north of Nashville. He was a farmer as his father was; twice widowed, with his wives dying in Tenn. and in Callahan County, Texas, respectively; father of nine and grandfather of fifteen.
