Hugh Cole married Sarah Bishop circa 1771. He was the son of Joseph Cole, I & Freelove Mason. Hugh was a signer of the Articles of the Association in the town and neighborhood of New-Paltz, in Ulster County, NY 10 May 1775. Hugh was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Company, Third Ulster County Regiment of the Militia (western) under Captain Peleg Ramsom, 9 August 1775 during the Revolutionary War. He died in Washington County, VA. His will reads Hugh left five orphans and his wife, Sarah. Four of his five children are known; Ann Cole, Uranie Mamie Cole, Joseph Cole, and Hugh Cole, Jr.
Hugh's original tombstone has been missing for many years. A new marker was erected for him in 2004 by his 5th great-grandson, Dennis Craig Stewart. VA Militia is a mistake on the marker, it should read NY Militia.
Nancy Cole Barber, Nancy Hough Bendle, Betty Johnson O'Brien, Cindy Cole Pappas, Dennis Craig Stewart, and Lillian Still Welch participated in Hugh Cole's Memorial service.
