Collapses, Dies on Leaving Car

A 73-year-old retired man collapsed and died Tuesday as he got out of his car behind his home. He was Clark McKinley Smith, 21 N. Barbee.

Neighbors told police Smith parked his car in the alley behind his home and collapsed as he got out of the auto. Officers found his body lying on its back beside the car.

He was born Aug. 24, 1896, on the Oolagah Indian Reservation in Oklahoma, the son of John Clark and Sophia Josephine Humphrey Smith. He moved with his family to Fort Scott as a child. Smith retired in 1952 as an employee of the Goodlander Mill. He married Izora Brashear, June 23, 1920, at Fort Scott, She died Dec. 21, 1942.

Surviving are five children, Elmer C. Smith, 101 Crescent Dr.; Mrs. Mae Barthel, Houston; Mrs. Betty Mertz, Pittsburg; Alice Goodwin, Bentonville, Ark.; and Cloyd Smith, Kansas City. Ivan Smith of 210 Washington is a brother. There are seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
