Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Sunday, October 21 at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, October 20 at Iles Funeral Homes - Grandview Chapel. Private burial will be at Berwick Cemetery at a later date.
Michael was born March 24, 1934 in Omaha, NE and had lived in Des Moines most of his life. Michael served in the US Army Corp. of Engineers and owned and operated Carpenter Vending Corp. for 30 years. Michael was an active member of Staves Memorial United Methodist Church and East High School Alumni Association. He also worked part time at Drake University for athletic events and many events held at Veterans Auditorium.
Michael had a passion for taking care of people, professionally and personally. He volunteered for Grandview Little League and East Des Moines Softball and was a youth leader at his church.
One of his proudest moments was as a player on the only undefeated East High School Football Team, Class of 1952.
Michael is survived by his wife, Shirley J.; son, Michael K. "Kelly" Carpenter and his wife Joyce of Des Moines; daughter, Deb Gardner and her husband David of Austin, TX; granddaughters, Jennifer L. Carpenter and Lindsey Jo Gardner; grandsons, Travis M. Carpenter and Matthew D. Gardner; brother, Lawrence White Jr. and his wife Barb of Des Moines; and loving nieces, Diana, Melinda, Christine, Angela and Elizabeth.
He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Staves Memorial United Methodist Church and the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
