William married Mary Hutchinson (b.1774, d.1849) in Ireland. She was also born in Ireland and they immigrated during 1819.

His sisters (Mary & Margaret) married a pair of brothers named William (b.1764, d.1829) & James Downing (b.1773, d.1840). The Downing boys were also born in Ireland but everyone ended up in Pennsylvania.

He was a farmer with a 400 acre tract, near his old friend Samuel McMurray, in Marion Twp. His children are reported to include: John, Betty Ann, Robert, William Jr., Joseph and Mary Gilchrist.

Many sir name variations were used by the Gilchrist family over the generations. These include: Gilgrest, Gillgrist, Gilghrist and Gilchrist.

For example: In many historical records for Butler Co., PA his son and daughter in-law, John & Juliet or "Jane", are listed using the Gilchrist sir name; however, their grave stone calls out their sir name as "Gilgrest.
