Wilbur married Betty Lou Smith, and they became the parents of a son and a daughter.
Prior to retirement after 35 years of service, he was a sergeant with the Pennsylvania State Police.
Wilbur was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Youngstown, FOP Lodge 47, Washington, Pa., and Loyalhanna Lodge 275 F&AM. He was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 8643, Pleasant Unity, and Unity Township American Legion Post 982, where he served 18 years as post secretary.
At the age of 85, Wilbur O. Shirey, of Unity Township, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, at his home.
He was survived by his wife, Betty Lou (Smith) Shirey; his son, Bruce D. Shirey and wife, Diane, of Youngstown; his daughter, Candace L. Hamer and husband, Richard L., of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, Candace J. Shirey and David J. Shirey and his companion, Brandi Lowe; four great-grandchildren, Sanova, Jaden, Jillian and Aiden Shirey; five stepgrandchildren, Austin, Gregory, Jeff, Zach and Tori; and a sister-in-law, Helen Shirey, of Latrobe.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur D. Shirey.
