Wm. T. Hankins Passes Away At Lafayette Today
Recent Resident of Gifford Community Dies After long Illness; Rites Monday
William Taylor Hankins, for many years a prominent figure in Gifford and Rensselaer and well known member of local fraternal orders, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas C. Jackson, in Lafayette at 11:50 o'clock this morning. His death followed five years of failing health.
Born in Andersonville, Tenn., May 22, 1875, he lived in Jasper county for fifty-two years before he and Mrs. Hankins went to Lafayette three years ago to make their home with their daughter. He was married to Miss Lemma Haniford of this community in 1902.
During his early adult years Mr. Hankins was employed here as a Monon railroad foreman and after that he was engaged in farming near Gifford for twelve years, following which he was the operator of a general store at Gifford for twenty-five years. For eleven years he served as postmaster of the Gifford office, which duties he combined with his store duties. Of more recent years he was a member of the State Highway department personnel here, in which position he continued until going to Lafayette.
Mr. Hankins was a member of the Baptist church of Tennessee, a 50-year charter member of Odd Fellows lodge No. 770 of Gifford, a member of the IOOF Encampment of Rensselaer, and a 40-year member of Modern Woodman No. 20 of Frankfort.
Surviving besides the widow and the daughter at whose home he died, are a son, James A. Hankins of Lafayette; a brother, A.A. Hankins of Fountain City, Tenn., and four grandchildren.
Friends may veiw the remains at Hippsenteel Funeral Home, 922 N. 9th street, Lafayette, after one o'clock Sunday. Services will be conducted from the Funeral home at 10 a.m., Monday, after which the remains will be taken to Barkley church to lie in state for one hour preceding church services which wil be held at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. L. M. Gaines of Lafayette, assisted by the Barkley M.E. church pastor, the Rev. D.F. Hamilton, officiating. Interment will be at Barkley cemetery.
