Last Rites for Samuel Chesnut, 100 Years Old, Will Be Held Saturday
Samuel Chesnut, a veteran of the Civil War and over 100 years old, died early Wednesday morning at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Elmer McAllister, near New Market. With the death of Mr. Chestnut, there are only two veterans of the Civil War still living in Highland County. They are: Joseph Siddons of Hillsboro and M. A. Garrett of near Belfast. Mr. Chestnut served in Co. B, 175th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
Mr. Chesnut was born on May 26, 1842, near Piketon, would have been 101 years old next May. He lived in Pike County until about 25 years of age when he moved to near Marshall and lived in that community most of the time after coming to his country.
Until the end Mr. Chesnut retained his faculties remarkably well and was well enough that he was in Hillsboro on Saturday, January 23, only ten days before his death.
Mr. Chesnut is survived by two sons, James and Ben of near Marshall and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two 0'clock at the Marshall Methodist Church with burial in the Marshall Cemetery.
