Jerome Thomas Meehan, 85, of Rockford passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, in SwedishAmerican Hospital. He was born in Rockford on June 26, 1928; the son of John and Florence (Kelly) Meehan. He graduated from St Thomas High School, class of 1944. Jerry began his career working as a surveyor during the construction of the Greater Rockford Airport. Jerome continued on his journey in life; working more than 36 dedicated years as a postal carrier for the USPS. He married his loving wife, Mary Louise Carey on June 23, 1956. Together they shared more than 48 years of marriage until she preceded him in death. Jerry was devoted to his Catholic faith; he was a humble parishioner for more than 78 years at St. Edward Catholic Church, where he served as an altar boy in his younger years and as head usher for more than 40 years. Jerry led his life by his devotion to his faith; instilling values to his seven children. He was an avid gardener and a phenomenal builder. Jerry enjoyed traveling the world with his family and together they visited 49 different states on different occasions. He was a lifelong member of St. Edward Catholic Church, a member of The Knights of Columbus for several years and a member of the US Army Reserves for 8 years. Jerry is survived by his children, James (Beverly) Taylor, Judith (William) Wolff, Jerome Thomas Meehan II, Mary (James) Thompson, John (Ulyana) Meehan, Patrick J. Meehan and Michael G. Meehan; 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Joan Gaines and Rose Carey. Predeceased by his loving wife, Mary Lousie; parents; brother, John R. Meehan; sister, Helen Lynde; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe Lynde, Dick Carey, Chub (Marilyn) Carey, Dan (Beverly) Roose, Tinny (Joy) Branney and Bob Gaines; great-granddaughter, Kristina. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2013, in St. Edward Catholic Church. Reverend William Schussler officiating. Visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Entombment in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Poor Clares Corpus Christi Monastery, 2111 S. Main St. Arrangements completed by Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Mulford Chapel.
