Henry Clay Bruce is best known for the book he authored, "The New Man: Twenty-Nine Years a Slave, Twenty-Nine Years a Free Man". He was born into slavery near Farmville in rural Prince Edward County, VA, but died as a free man in Washington D.C. where he worked for the United States Post Office. His younger brother was Blanche Kelso Bruce, the first African-American to serve a full term as a United States Senator.
