George is the son of Samuel Ellis Murphy and Barbara Luce of Pennsylvania.

He married Laura Thorndell on March 22, 1888 in Uniontown, Fayette, Pennsylvania. To this marriage, 4 children were born: Alice, Nancy, Charles and Samuel. Sadley Laura died in 1907.

After Laura's death, George married Kittie Mayme Craig of Fowlerville, Michigan on July 27, 1908. There were no children from this marriage.

Sometime before the 1920 census, George and Mayme moved to Detroit. Then before George's death they moved back to Mayme's hometown area of Fowlerville.
