Margaret Caffey
Margaret Lou Caffey, a resident of Rockdale for nearly 40 years, went home Monday, October 7, 2013. She was 91. Margaret, known to almost everyone as "Margo" or "Aunt Margaret," whether she was their aunt or not, was born in Williamson County, Texas, in the community of Friendship, to Howard and Pearl Fulcher. She was the youngest and last surviving child of Howard's and Pearl's eight children. She is now reunited in Paradise with her parents and her brothers and sisters Katie Isabel, Billye Cannon, J. B. Fulcher, Laura Horton, Irene Hester, Howard Fulcher, and baby Dorothy Fulcher.
She moved with her family to the Walter Felton farm in 1930. She attended school in San Gabriel, and graduated from San Gabriel High School in 1940. While she was a young teenager, she worked in Cameron for the National Youth Administration program, a New Deal agency, during the Depression. Margaret then moved to Houston to find work while living with relatives. There she met and married J. D. Caffey in 1946. J. D. died in Rockdale in 2001. While in Houston, Margaret worked for 12 years "for that big shot who always wore solid white and nobody ever saw." That was Howard Hughes, and her 12 year stint at Hughes Tool Co. in Houston was her most favorite place she ever worked. After a work slow-down at Hughes, she left the company and was hired by Brown & Root, a subsidiary of Halliburton, and worked there 12 years also. She worked in the blueprint rooms for both companies.
Margaret took up league bowling in 1950, and bowled regularly until she was almost 90. The sport was important to her, but not nearly as important as the life-long friendships she developed over that 60-year period. She later became a member of The Meadowlarks, a group of senior singers and instrumentalists who regularly bring joy and peace to members of nursing homes and others in the area. Margaret requested that she be buried with the Bible that was given to her by her sister Laura in 1962. That request gives the most accurate description of her that could be given – she was a faithful and humble disciple of Jesus Christ and a child of the King. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockdale. Margaret is survived by Fulcher family nieces and nephews Johnnie Phillips of Pearland, Nancy Kay Jobes of San Angelo, Brenda Perricone of Seabrook, Donald Isabel of Victoria, Peggy Boles of Houston, Larry Fulcher of Sugar Land, Sharon Humphrey of Fulshear, Texas, and Jim Hester of Plano. She is also survived by a host of Caffey family in-laws too numerous to list here!
Her family offers special words of appreciation to John and Dina Ballard, Wanda and Jerry Waggoner, Elizabeth Rogers, Connie and Harry Schielack, and John Robert and Sue Caffey for their help, prayers, compassion, and support. Her family was also humbled by the entire staff of Rockdale Residence and Rehabilitation Center and their care, compassion, and kindness in helping Aunt Margaret and her family and friends through her final days. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery in Rockdale. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Phillips & Luckey.
