27 Oct 1905: John B. Batdorf, a well known and highly respected resident of Mt. Zion, was fatally stricken with apoplexy on Thursday evening, while driving home from a business visit to this city. He had come here with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Wolf, widow of the late R.K. Wolf, of Fredericksburg, who took out letters of administration on the estate of her deceased husband. As they were nearing Fredericksburg, Mrs. Wolf noticed that her father had become suddenly ill, and she at once drove to the residence of Dr. J.M. Strohm, who upon examination pronounced life extinct. Mr. Batdorf was 68 years old, and of late years lived a retired life, making his home since the death of his wife, five years ago, with his son, John G. Batdorf, at Mt. Zion. Although he had been complaining of feeling unwell for some time, he had his customary health and spirits up to a short time before the final summons came. His death was a great shock to his children, and is sincerely mourned in the community where he was held in high esteem. He was a Civil War veteran, having served four years as a member of Company C, 69th Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was a member of the congregation worshipping at Zoar's Lutheran church. In politics he was a Democrat. Four children, Mrs. Wolf, John G. Batdorf, Mrs. Penrose Loser, of this city, and Mrs. Emma Wolf, of Salina, Kansas, survive him. [Lebanon Daily News]
