After high school graduation, Doug enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the flight deck of several aircraft carriers. Doug married Rhonda Howie in 1976. They had one son, Brent. In 1998, he married Lorna Ogle, who preceded him in death in 1999.

Doug exercised his artistic and creative talents through his many years of work as a welder/fabricator at Lockwoods, B & C Steel, Egging Company and RC Welding.

Doug enjoyed all sports, and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker and Denver Bronco fan. He loved listening to music, watching movies and sporting events, and reading. Doug always enjoyed anything related to food. Doug had a deep love for Western Nebraska which always brought him home whenever he left.

Doug is survived by his son, Brent Barrett and granddaughter, Jocelyn Barrett of Pensacola, FL; brother Joel Barrett of Lincoln; sisters, Susan (James) Piper of Golden, CO and Laura (Charles) Lee of Gering and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Timothy; grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and one brother-in-law.

Doug's dry sense of humor, love and loyalty to family and friends, and generosity to all he met will be greatly missed.
